Larvae usually enter through a pet\u2019s feet or mouth from contaminated soil.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Whipworm (<\/strong><strong><em>Trichuris vulpis<\/em><\/strong><strong>): <\/strong>Lives in the large intestine and can cause irritation and diarrhea. Transmitted through a pet\u2019s interaction with contaminated soil.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tapeworm (<\/strong><strong><em>Dipylidium caninum<\/em><\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong><em>Taenia <\/em><\/strong><strong>species, <\/strong>and<strong> <\/strong><strong><em>Echinococcus<\/em><\/strong><strong> species): <\/strong>Can cause growth stunting in puppies and kittens but isn\u2019t usually serious in adult pets. Spread when a pet ingests an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplaceveterinary.com\/blog\/dont-tell-fleas-and-ticks-but-its-time-to-focus-on-parasite-prevention\/\">infected flea<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fleas (<\/strong><strong><em>Ctenocephalides felis<\/em><\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong><em>Ctenocephalides canis<\/em><\/strong><strong>): <\/strong>External parasite that feeds on your pet\u2019s blood, causing irritation, itchiness, and skin infections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ticks, including dog tick (<\/strong><strong><em>Rhipicephalus sanguineus<\/em><\/strong><strong>), Lone Star tick (<\/strong><strong><em>Amblyomma americanum<\/em><\/strong><strong>), and deer tick (<\/strong><strong><em>Ixodes scapularis<\/em><\/strong><strong>): <\/strong>Feed on your pet\u2019s blood. Can transmit serious diseases to both cats and dogs, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, cytauxzoonosis, and tularemia.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that this isn\u2019t a complete list, either! There are thousands of potential parasites out there. The good news is that an ounce of prevention truly is worth a pound of cure when it comes to pet parasites.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pet Parasite Prevention<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Of all the pests listed above, ticks and heartworms can be the most dangerous\u2014and fleas one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplaceveterinary.com\/blog\/help-my-pet-has-fleas-now-what\/\">hardest to get rid of<\/a>. Thankfully, there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplaceveterinary.com\/blog\/how-to-detect-treat-and-prevent-fleas-and-ticks-year-round\/\">effective prevention<\/a> for all three of these common pet parasites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heartworm preventive medication works by killing off larvae before they can mature into adulthood and start causing serious problems. Kittens and puppies should begin receiving heartworm preventives as early as possible\u2014ideally, before they\u2019re eight weeks old.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any later, and heartworms may already have begun maturing to adulthood, which means preventives won\u2019t work to get rid of them. If your pet is older than eight weeks and you\u2019re unsure when they last had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplaceveterinary.com\/blog\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-heartworm\/\">heartworm preventive<\/a>, take them to the veterinarian for heartworm testing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the test is negative, your veterinarian will prescribe preventive medication. If your pet tests positive for heartworm infection, treatment must begin as soon as possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flea and tick preventive medications are often bundled into one product. They work by killing flea larvae and adult ticks. This makes it difficult for the parasites to infect your pet. Talk to your veterinarian about the best flea and tick preventives for your cat or dog.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Symptoms of Parasite Infections in Pets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Parasites come with all sorts of potential symptoms.
